Lesson 3: Responding to emergency events

This lesson presents the activities that involve EH professionals in responding to a disaster. After immediate actions and procedures have been discussed, the focus turns to specific areas like disease, water and food safety, sanitation and the many other responsibilities that fall on the shoulders of EH professionals. Personal and workplace plans are also covered.

After you complete this lesson, you will be able to:

• Know what to do in the immediate wake of a disaster.
• Know who is responsible for what in a disaster.
• Follow local procedures for emergency response.
• Respond to activities that involve your area of expertise.
• Prepare an emergency plan for you and your family.
• Describe the value of an emergency plan for the workplace.
