Part 1: Surveillance Overview

This lesson introduces basic foodborne disease surveillance concepts and applications, as well as the purposes, parameters and problems of surveillance.

Upon completion of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Define Public Health surveillance and its application.
  • Explain why Public Health surveillance is important.
  • State four primary purposes of foodborne disease surveillance.
  • List key parameters of foodborne disease surveillance.
  • Identify various jurisdictional levels of existing foodborne surveillance methods.

Describe the fundamental problem of foodborne disease surveillance.
